Replacement by Fixed Teeth ---
If a tooth or teeth have been removed from your mouth for any reason, they must be replaced as missing teeth can cause displacement of the surrounding and opposing teeth. Teeth with cracks or massive fillings should be crowned to serve you better.
Fixed replacement includes crowns and bridges.
Dental Crowns:-
Also called caps restore the damage tooth its form and function of damaged teeth. It simulates the shape, size and color of the surrounding teeth. Crowns are indicated for teeth with big cavities, discolored teeth, malformed teeth, root-canal treated teeth and also for the support of bridges.
  • Crowns may be made of metal, esthetic materials like metal fused to porcelain or high esthetic materials like metal free ceramics. They are custom made and fixed for each patient in confirmation with the shape and size of the existing natural teeth.
  • The tooth to be crowned is prepared i.e. reduced in size followed by making an impression or mould of the prepared teeth. This reduction in size of the tooth is required to create space for the crown that is to be fixed. This mould is then sent to the dental laboratory where skilled technicians fabricate the crown. For the time elasped between tooth preparation and fabrication of the final crown, a temporary crown is made and fixed on the prepared tooth.
Dental Bridges:-
A bridge is fabricated to replace the missing tooth or teeth by taking support of adjacent permanent teeth. Missing tooth is replaced with an artificial tooth connected between two crowns (Caps) which are permanently fixed on the adjacent teeth.
  • Bridges increase the chewing efficiency, improve the esthetics and prevent the surrounding teeth from moving or shifting from their original position. This shifting could make the tooth unstable and require removal compromising the oral health and the smile.
  • Bridges are permanent and patients need not remove them. They function like natural teeth itself. The number of missing teeth, condition of adjacent teeth, supporting gums and bone are important factors to be taken into consideration prior to making a bridge.
